"Mnh." A grunt as he points towards the kitchen. If Lisa was hurt then it's a damn sure sign that Leonard is sporting more than a black eye and a split lip. "Then go in there and prove it to me while your kid sister is cleaning up."
Okay, so it's a cheap shot but it's one taken out of concern. Leonard is the kind to swear he can walk off a broken damn leg as long as it will keep eyes averted and hands off of him and Mick is in no mood to argue back and forth about it, especially if he's nursing busted ribs or worse under his shirt.
His eyes narrow and his jaw sets. Cheap fucking shot, asshole.
But it gets him what he wants and Leonard rolls his eyes as he marches into the kitchen and carefully tugs his shirt over his head. There's a rainbow of bruises, in varying degrees of healing because, hey, it's not like this is a once in awhile thing. His ribs might be bruised, but otherwise his story checks out. "See, fine."
All his attitude aside, he actually doesn't hate that Mick gets so insistent about these things. But he also doesn't really know how to handle people caring about him. Too used to dealing on his own.
Cheap shot. Don't care. Mick's expression is wholly unrepentant as Leonard tugs his shirt off. Then he has to set his own jaw because frankly he's getting fucking tired of seeing bruises like this on him. Snart won't let him touch freely, but Mick can get in a few probing touches to be sure ribs are just bruised and not in need of taping up. If he keeps his mind on the situation he won't let it wander, won't think about touching him for other reasons, won't think about the profound show of trust in even being allowed to see him with his shirt off.
He fishes out a bottle from a cabinet by the sink. "Here. Take a couple of those."
Then he starts poking his head in the refrigerator. "You two eat? Think I got enough in here to make somethin.."
Take care of Leonard. Take care of Lisa. While he'd much rather push Lewis's face in and light his miserable ass on fire, Mick is capable of sticking to the priorities.
He bites the inside of his cheek as Mick's fingers brush across his skin. He doesn't do well with these things, and who could be surprised when he's spent his life with touch always translating to pain and lessons about how wrong and terrible and worthless he is? Not an easy thing to get past. Mick has gotten further than anyone else, so really, he should be glad for earning that much.
Once Mick's inspection is done, he pulls his shirt back on, taking the bottle and tapping out a couple of pills to toss into his mouth. More to make Mick happy than anything because he would have probably just gone without it otherwise. "Earlier, but-" he shrugs, "Lis might be hungry."
And it's almost like uttering her name makes her appear because it's that moment that Lisa rushes back into the room. "Mickey, I'm all ready for my hot chocolate!" She beams up at him. For all that she went through tonight, she's bouncing back with relative ease.
Or she's taking cues from her big brother in how to handle things. Leonard isn't sure he likes the idea of her pushing things aside the way he does, but what does he do about it?
It's clear he doesn't like it, doesn't like even being exposed like this and Mick wishes (yet again) that things were different. That he could show him with touch just how fucking much he wanted him. How much he cared. Show him with touch because he's utter crap with words.
But that's not how things work with them.
And before a fight can start up about Len leaving once and for all Lisa bounds into the room and steals their attention right away.
Typical for a Snart.
"Almost done with it, grab a spoon."
So Mick boosts her onto the counter so Lisa can have her hot chocolate with extra marshmallows while he makes up sandwiches for the both of them. It isn't much, but he'll clean his kitchen completely bare to make sure he sends both of them home with some food and a safe place to sleep for the night.
Lisa happily sips at her cocoa and munches on her sandwich. Mick makes the best hot chocolate, there's always so many marshmallows! "Can we watch a movie after we're done?"
He doesn't resist the urge to roll his eyes when a sandwich is handed to him. Of course Mick is going to insist on it because Leonard specifically left himself out of the equation when food was mentioned and Mick has already in the short few years they've known each other been able to read between the lines with him more than most people ever bother to. "You can watch a movie and go to bed, me and Mick gotta talk awhile."
Lisa pouts at her brother. He's no fun sometimes. "How come?" she looks at Mick for the real answer because Leonard treats her like a baby too much sometimes. The fact that to both of them she is kinda still a baby doesn't really register to her little seven year old brain.
"Lis..." Leonard sighs softly and shakes his head.
"Cause your brother's gotta help me with a few things," Mick interrupts. "You know me, never was able to read more than a few words without things going all screwy." She gets a wink and a tap to his temple. And Lisa, even in her youth had never ever considered mocking Mick for his inability to read more than a few words without screwing them up. The diagnosis of dyslexia would come decades too late, long after the damage had been done. "You'd get bored listening to me and your brother anyway."
Mick shoos her towards the couch and manages to get in one of her favorite movies with a blanket and pillow tucked securely around her before he heads back to the kitchen, fishing out a pair of beers for him and his partner.
Leonard smiles a little as he watches the two of them. Mick is amazing with her, and gives her things Leonard himself sometimes just can't manage. It works for them, and he thinks if he can just get everything aligned right, they'll be golden once they get out from under their father's thumb.
Normally, he'd move these conversations to Mick's room in the back, away from prying little ears, but not tonight. Tonight, he's too on edge to let her out of his sight like that. So, instead he stays in the kitchen, leaned up against the counter where he can have eyes on her. He takes the beer from Mick and cracks it open to take a sip. Not really because he wants it, more than because ir's there.
"I wanna get outta there, Mick..." His voice is distant, and tinted with an edge of desperation. "But I gotta be able to take her when I go. I can't leave her alone with him."
Ever since he met a very young Lisa Snart, Mick knew she was going to rule his entire world, not unlike her brother. So he does what he can, filling in the empty spaces with what Lisa needs or just covering for Len when he can't be there.
"You two can't keep this up," he agrees and as much as Mick would rather drive over there and end Lewis, that wouldn't solve anything. Lisa would go into the foster system and Leonard would never forgive him for that. "So use that brain of yours. Figure a way out. Set his ass up on a job. I can pull together a crew, people we can trust."
It's not much but he never was the idea man.
"You know you always got this place if you need it. To hide out, I mean." And he'd always have Mick, but that part always went unsaid.
He smirks a little at the suggestion, he doesn't hate it, but--
"It's not that simple," because nothing ever is, and Leonard has been thinking about this for awhile now. Pouring over law books and researching things he could. "I was looking into some stuff, I could get out now, I could make a case to get emancipated, sever his paternal rights to me, but I dunno what would happen with her, if I did. She could end up in the system or somethin'. But if we hold off til next year, I don't even have to deal with all that. Next summer, I'll be eighteen, I can leave whenever I want and I can push to be her legal guardian."
He takes a long sip of his beer. "It'll be insane and they'd be in our business for awhile, but once they know I can handle it and she's fine..." he shrugs. There's a lot of risk in it because there's a lot of law to it, but so far it seems to be the best plan he could see. He stares up at Mick, waiting to judge his reaction.
"That's another year Lenny. Another year of dodging him and another year of him holding your kid sister over your head," he points out. "You could push to be her guardian, but you really think they're gonna let you? Or that the old bastard will let her go?"
He doesn't want to point out the ways this can go wrong and Mick might not have the same attention to detail as his partner, but he owes it to him to try.
"But if you need me, you got me. Whatever it'll take to get you two free and clear."
He knows Mick's right, which is why his gaze drops to the floor. He's in such a shit spot with all of this and it's so frustrating knowing that every time something sounds viable, there's always another roadblock to stand in the way. He sets the beer down on the counter, trying to think his way out of this.
"I dunno what to do, Mick..." he says quietly, looking back up at him. "I can't just take her and leave, he'd press charges fast enough to make my head spin. Another year...it's so far away. She needs out, but--" he scrubs a hand over his face.
"Could you do it?" the words rip from him suddenly, a desperate grip on any shred of possibility, even if he won't dare actually hope. "You're nineteen, you're already of age... Is that--" that. That night. When his family and his house went up in smoke. "is it sealed or did they charge you as an adult? If it's sealed, then maybe it wouldn't...they wouldn't go that far back, right? So, maybe..." he shrugs, helpless. And that's exactly how all of this feels; helpless. Stuck between a rock and a hard place and an avalanche is threatening to cave in on top of him for all his trouble.
Leonard lets his knees buckle and he slides down to the floor, knees drawn up toward his chest, arms hanging loosely between them. He drops his head back against the cabinet with a soft thud, staring up at Mick, the picture of discouragement. "Fuck," it's a quiet, hopeless whisper instead of the scream he wants it to be, because Lisa's in the next room asleep.
Mention of that night has him setting down his beer hard enough that it foams up and over his hand. He can't. As much as he wants to he can't. "You know they'll find a way to unseal those records."
Unstable. Pyromaniac. Killer. The words all but branded into his skin like the scars Lenny and Lisa bear.
He sinks down beside him, and damn the risk, Mick slides an arm around him. "You'll figure it out. Whatever you gotta do you know I'll be there. No matter what it takes." "
The reaction is subtle enough to be missed, especially in his distraction of the mention of old wounds that never really healed. Never will. But there's a tension in his shoulders at the clang of the beer against the counter. It's not Mick, he's never been worried about Mick, it's just actions. He can't disconnect them.
"M'sorry, I..." He leans over to bury his face in his arms across his knees. Such a fuckup. He didn't mean to take Mick to that place, he's just terrified of how this will all end, desperate to get Lisa out of it, before her problems are worse than a shallow cut on her shoulder. Mick can't see the way his fingers dig into his palm, it's a kind of habit he's had for years now, a thing he does to ground himself. He can't ever be too far out of control in any direction, whether that's anger or fear or sadness or anything else, he has to stay focused and on a set line, a clear head and cold logic are the only things that have gotten him this far.
He feels the arm around his shoulders and he tenses at the unexpectedness of it, but it eases a little when he hears Mick's voice, a steady murmur in his ear. He's bad with these things, but goddammit if Mick can't tell when he actually needs it sometimes. It's a little unnerving, but the comfort outweighs the rest and he sinks a little against Mick's side.
This is the safest he ever feels, and he thinks it's not any different for Lisa. Mick's place, Mick in general is safety for them and Leonard can't wait for that feeling to be a constant in place of everything else. He just doesn't know how they're going to achieve that distant static-dream.
Mick can't think about that night, he can't think about the fire or anything else when his partner, when his best friend needs him. He might not be the brightest but Mick has always had an intuitive nature which helps him read when Leonard wants him near and when he should back off. He's not right all the time, but he's getting better at it.
While he can't fix this, can't find a way to just make Lewis disappear, he can be there for his friend and little Lisa.
"Hey," he murmurs softly, using his free hand to dig into his pocket. Mick pulls out his hand and there are two silver keys laying across his palm. "Figure you two should be able to come and go here as you please. Your old man don't know where I live."
"It's another year. Whatever you need me to do, okay? If you want me to try for custody, I'll try."
He tilts his head up at the soft 'hey', frowning a little as Mick reaches into his pocket for something. He cants his head slightly to one side before sitting up a little more and taking the keys out of his hand. "Thanks." Doesn't feel like enough for the actual level of gratitude he has for this, but it's all he can think to say anyway.
He shrugs a little. "I dunno, I mean-- if we can make a case for it...maybe? But I can't have you getting in trouble for trying, or I'll be really fucked." He admits, shaking his head a little but he considers it all the same. "We'll see what we can put together. What kinda shit they'll find when they start diggin' into you. You've kept this place for, what, a year or two now, right? That's in your favor, at least."
Really, he'd meant to drop it at 'we'll see what we can put together", leave the rest for later, but once he gets started it's kind of hard to stop sometimes.
Mick's been trying to keep his head down, to work whatever crap jobs he can just so he can hold on to the apartment. Leonard and Lisa needed him to - they needed a safe place to go that had a decent door and food in the kitchen. He hated it, hated the menial jobs and the way he was treated but he was doing it for the two people who actually mattered to him.
Another nudge, trying to cut him off mid-plan. "Lenny." A sigh. "We ain't gonna figure this out in one night. Lisa's sleeping. She's okay. Go get some sleep. I'll make sure you're up early enough to get back."
"I know, I just--" He sighs. This is where they differ, widely, in how they deal with things. Leonard plans, and plots and schemes and studies every angle of a situation until he has considered every possibility he can think of and predicted every possible outcome.
He rests his forehead against his knees again. "I don't think I can sleep right now, Mick." He could, if he'd let himself atop for five minutes, but he's no good at turning his mind off when it comes to these things.
Sex would help him sleep. Or a good drink or two. Mick, however, knows that both are completely off the table with Lisa asleep on the couch and the level of tension that's still riding Len's shoulders.
"C'mon. Just lay down with me. If you can't sleep you should at least do it someplace more comfortable."
He hums a little at the suggestion, a neutral sound that's mostly acknowledgement that he heard him and he's considering it. Mick's bed would be more comfortable than the kitchen floor.
"'Kay." He mumbles and slowly gets himself to his feet. He checks the locks on the door and stops to make sure Lisa's really asleep before making his way to the bedroom in the back.
Mick runs his own quick check of the place before heading back into his bedroom. He strips down to his jeans, pulling off his shirt but going no further. Leonard won't want anything in terms of intimacy tonight - so he's going get comfortable enough to sleep but no more than that. He stretches out in bed, waiting for his partner and best friend to finally ratchet his head down enough to at least lay with him in the cool dark.
Leonard curls up on his side, facing Mick and watching as he tugs his shirt off and settles on the bed next to him. He's quiet for a little while, trying to shut everything down and at least grab a couple hours of sleep before he has to get Lisa and himself back home. But it's hard to come down from that kind of height-- of panic, anxiety, anger, all mixed into a ball that forms a tight knot in his stomach.
"Think we'll really get this all figured out soon?" he asks quietly. Three years isn't long in the grand scheme of things, but it's long enough for Mick to have figured out that even when he tries, Leonard can't help but obsess about things sometimes, and where his sister and her safety are concerned, he's even worse. Which is probably understandable, but frustrating to deal with all the same.
Mick wants to reach out and pull him in, to hold him and offer him what solace he could.
But he can't. Won't. In the dark Mick blows out a breath. What Len needs to do is sleep, give himself time to rest and recover, but he knows when he gets on an obsessive tear there's little that will throw him off track.
"I think if anybody can, it'll be you. And you know I'll do whatever you need. Anything okay?"
"I know," he says softly, nodding a little. There's a weird sort of hesitation, not really in his words more than just hanging in the air between them and he slowly reaches over and tangles his fingers with Mick's. He needs those sorts of things more than Leonard does, usually, and sometimes he indulges it for Mick's sake. But this is really more for himself this time.
Sometimes, it's just nice to know that there's some kind of constant in his life. "You've always been here when I needed you, since we met. I don't see that changing any time soon."
Mick breathes out slowly, tangling his fingers with Leonard's. It's the most he can offer in terms of comfort tonight. A safe place, caring for his best friend and his little sister. Holding his hand in the dark.
A small smile.
"Yeah, you ain't gonna get rid of me anytime soon." Whatever happened, Mick would stand beside him for the rest of his life.
