He thinks the problem is more about not seeing the point of breaking down the real meanings behind smilies and symbols.
Mick snorts, "No, of course it isn't literal," he agrees. "I just don't see the point of 'what does this mean' and 'what does that mean'. It is what it is."
"Right." He smiles a little, glad that he's already pinpointed the actual issue, here. "It's not pointless when you're disecting literature, though. Similies and metaphors are pretty handy sometimes." Or Leonard is just kind of a nerd. Whatever.
His nose wrinkles a bit in confusion. Why speak in flowery language when you could just say what you mean? It's a concept he's never quite been able to grasp, much to his utter frustration. "How? Why? I don't.. I don't get them."
"So, that's a simile. You use them all the time, I promise they're not as pointless as they seem." Drawing on the familiar is the best tactic he's found for thing a like this. And he'll keep making comparisons like that through the rest of the session, explaining concepts from the last quiz in ways that make way more sense than Professor Reysen could ever manage to do.
But eventually, the lesson draws to something of a natural close and drawing it back to what it really is has something awkward settling over Leonard. "So... do you think... this is gonna help? I mean, I know it's just one session and that's not always the best time to judge, but if my teaching style doesn't work for you, I can probably try to help find someone better or...whatever."
And it does start to make more sense, explaining things in a way Mick can grasp rather than "it is what it is". He slides his papers back into his bag and shakes his head, "No, you don't have to. I mean.. I think this'll work. It's already making more sense."
"I hope Reysen is at least paying you for this shit," he offers with a smirk. "Tutoring the dumb jock and all. Probably got better things to do with your time."
"You're not dumb," he shakes his head, and there's something so sincere in his words. He isn't saving face, he means it. "He didn't say anything about paying me, but it's okay...I mostly just study, so..." He shrugs a little. Sad, probably, but true. He checks in with Lisa as often as possible and otherwise just keeps to himself.
There's something in his denial that reminds him of Becky. Insisting that he isn't dumb even when simple things like metaphor are hard for him to grasp. It's.. nice.
"Um, maybe we can do it over lunch then tomorrow? Least I can do if you can help me boost my grades so I don't lose my scholarship."
