Harrison knew what the holidays meant for Cisco. He used to keep things professional, as much as he seemed able. Sometimes offering a somewhat fatherly nudge reminding Cisco that he needed to see his family. Distant but open. However, in recent years, he'd been easing up on that. Now that things were truly under way, he needed Cisco trusting him more than ever. So he'd opened up more and more, listening to him, not pushing him toward his family so much.
As Christmas grew nearer, instead of the usual reminder, he had something else prepared. When Barry and Caitlin left and it was just the two of them working a little late, he wheeled over to Cisco, and simply presented him with a small box wrapped in simple gold paper. Inside was a small gift. He hardly considered it practical, but something that he knew Cisco would appreciate. He simply reached out and set it on the desk in front of the other, without a word.
Holidays for Cisco were...complicated. This time that was supposed to be happy and joyous and spent with loved ones was tainted by a family that had never really appreciated him. Harrison had always given him a nudge about it in the past, but slowly through the years even that changed, and he was more apt to listen more than push him toward anything at all. Cisco's not entirely sure the man understands how much that really means to him.
Late nights in the lab are nothing unusual for the pair of them, and Cisco is too busy with whatever he's working on to notice Harrison until he stops by his desk and the box is suddenly in the field of his peripheral. He pauses and looks up, a little surprised and that's written all too plainly on his face. "You-- you didn't have to..." he gestures wordlessly at the gift.
Settling his elbows on the arms of his chair, Harrison let both hands rest relaxed in his lap. His head canted to the said with a vaguest of shrugs. Dismissive but amicable, not wanting to hear any of that usual polite refusal nonsense.
"It's nothing more than a token of my appreciation, Cisco. With...all you do here, sometimes I worry you don't see just how valued you are here." As if he were so focused on Barry he were somehow neglecting Cisco. When he'd given just as much attention to his sharpest team member. The one who was most likely to figure it all out. A smile spread over his face and he nodded at the box. "Go on. Open it."
The irony is, Dr. Wells is one of the few people in his life that have really made an appreciative impression on him. Made him feel valued and wanted-- wanted, rather than needed, which is an important distinction in Cisco's mind because being needed implies there's an expiration on an intended use of skill or something.
He huffs an amused half-laugh and picks the box up to open it, a grin spreading across his face when he sees the gift inside. He can't help recalling the time the pair of them had a marathon of the movies--even the terrible one that led Cisco into a rant of all the reasons it was the worst of the series. He hadn't thought it meant anything to the older man, but it'd obviously stuck with him somehow, too.
"Oh my God, this is so cool." He looks up, that grin still firmly in place. "Thanks, Dr. Wells." Suddenly, he feels awkward and imbalanced for not having anything for him in return, but Cisco just makes a mental note to have something ready and waiting on his desk Monday morning. He deserved that much, for everything he'd been to Cisco through the years.
Tis the Season
